British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a closely watched trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after a three-week trial in which several women gave evidence about alleged sexual offenses committed by the entertainer between 1999 and 2009.
According to the BBC, the jury convicted Brand on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. However, he was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Following the verdict, the presiding judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, warned that Brand should expect a substantial prison sentence, indicating that the seriousness of the convictions made immediate custody necessary.
“You’ve been convicted of a number of offenses, including rape. The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term,” the judge told him.
Brand, who had denied the charges, is expected to be sentenced on Monday, November 9.
Prosecutors described a pattern of predatory behavior.
The case involved allegations from six women, whose identities were protected under British law. During the trial, the women took turns giving evidence, recounting their experiences while Brand was present in court.
Prosecutors portrayed the comedian as a man who pursued women aggressively and showed little regard for their consent. They argued that his sexual behavior reflected a pattern of exploitation rather than isolated incidents.
In her closing arguments, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones maintained that the women had no financial or publicity-related motivation for coming forward, suggesting that their decision to testify was driven largely by a desire to have their experiences heard.
Brand’s defense lawyer, Ian Winter, challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of events. He argued that although his client might have behaved disrespectfully towards women, inappropriate or unkind sexual behavior should not automatically be treated as criminal conduct.
From Hollywood fame to a courtroom conviction
Brand was once a prominent figure in British entertainment and Hollywood, building a career as a comedian, actor, and television personality. In recent years, however, he shifted towards online commentary, where he became known for discussing Christianity, wellness, and conspiracy-related topics.
His public image began facing serious scrutiny in 2023 after investigations by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4 brought forward allegations of sexual misconduct involving several women.
Brand initially denied the accusations. However, he later acknowledged having had sex with a 16-year-old when he was 30, describing himself at the time as immature.
The guilty verdict marks a significant turning point in the entertainer’s career and follows years of public controversy surrounding his personal conduct.
With sentencing scheduled for November 9, attention will now turn to the punishment the court considers appropriate for the offences of which he has been convicted.
