The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has entered a new leadership phase following the confirmation of Francis Bullem as its substantive state chairman, while simultaneously declaring support for the political movement being championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The decisions were reached during the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held on Thursday at its secretariat in Calabar.
Naija News reports that the committee formally accepted the resignation of the former state chairman, Venatius Ikem, before approving Bullem’s nomination and ratifying him as his successor.
According to a communiqué signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mike Ojisi, the appointment was made in accordance with Article 47, Sections 5 and 6 of the PDP Constitution (2017), as amended.
Bullem’s emergence comes at a critical period for the opposition party, which has continued to grapple with internal disagreements and leadership challenges in different parts of the country. His immediate task will be to provide direction, strengthen party unity, and reposition the Cross River chapter ahead of future political contests.
Beyond the leadership change, the meeting also produced a significant political statement, as the state executive committee openly endorsed Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and recognized him as the national leader of the party.
The endorsement signals the Cross River PDP leadership’s alignment with Wike’s political direction, further highlighting the influence the FCT minister continues to wield within the party despite its internal divisions.
The development could also have implications for the PDP’s internal power dynamics and its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, the committee raised concerns over alleged repeated attacks on PDP members and supporters of other opposition parties during political activities across Cross River State.
It condemned the incidents and called for an atmosphere where political parties and their supporters could exercise their democratic rights without intimidation, harassment, or violence.
The SEC also reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of party members and ensuring strict adherence to the PDP constitution.
Recall that Ikem resigned as Cross River PDP chairman on October 16, reportedly citing internal divisions, leadership difficulties, and the absence of a clear direction within the party.
With Bullem now officially taking over, attention will be on whether the new chairman can resolve existing disagreements, strengthen the party’s structure, and build a united front ahead of the next electoral cycle.
