A 19-year-old Nigerian teenager has been sentenced to four years in prison in the United Kingdom after attempting to steal a luxury Porsche Cayenne at gunpoint during what was supposed to be a private car sale.
Fawaz Oyedeji, who lives in Greenwich, London, reportedly posed as a genuine buyer after responding to an online advert for the Porsche Cayenne, valued at £72,500.
He arranged to meet the seller at their home in Southwark on Tuesday, March 18, 2026. After being shown around the luxury SUV, the pair reportedly sat in the front seats to discuss the proposed purchase.
However, what appeared to be a routine business transaction quickly turned into a robbery attempt when Oyedeji allegedly pulled out what looked like a firearm, pointed it at the seller, and demanded the vehicle’s keys.
The victim refused to surrender the keys and bravely fought back, forcing Oyedeji to abandon the attempt and flee the scene.
Police were immediately contacted, and detectives launched an investigation to identify the suspect.
Investigators eventually traced the phone used to arrange the viewing to Oyedeji. Further inquiries established that the device had been in the vicinity of both his home and the location of the attempted robbery.
CCTV footage also helped detectives reconstruct his movements before and after the incident, while clothing recovered by officers matched what the suspect had reportedly worn during the attempted robbery.#
Oyedeji was arrested at his home on Leonard Robbins Path within 38 hours of the incident.
Following his arrest and subsequent prosecution, a jury at Inner London Crown Court found him guilty after just 26 minutes of deliberation on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. He was subsequently sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
Detective Constable Alex Long, who led the investigation, praised the victim for standing his ground despite being threatened with what appeared to be a real firearm.
He also commended the officers whose work with CCTV footage, digital records, and forensic evidence helped secure the conviction.
Police have since urged members of the public buying or selling vehicles privately to exercise caution, particularly when arranging meetings with strangers. They advised sellers to trust their instincts, walk away from suspicious encounters, and call emergency services when necessary.
The case serves as a reminder of the risks that can accompany private vehicle sales and how seemingly ordinary online transactions can become dangerous when criminals exploit the trust of unsuspecting sellers.
