Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has identified Youri Tielemans as the player who needs to seize his opportunity following Carlos Baleba’s injury, with the midfielder potentially facing an important run of games in the coming weeks.
Baleba picked up a hamstring injury during Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over AS Roma at Old Trafford in midweek. The midfielder was forced off in the 51st minute, with Tielemans introduced as his replacement.
With Baleba now expected to miss Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Aston Villa, attention has shifted to who can fill the gap in United’s midfield.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former United captain backed Tielemans to make the most of the opportunity, particularly as the team looks to maintain its momentum.
“Great to see Tielemans back in. Let’s hope he continues,” Ferdinand said.
He added that Baleba’s absence could provide Tielemans with the chance to build consistency, improve his performances, and establish himself as an important member of the squad.
“I think you look at somebody like him, especially with Baleba being injured now; you want to make sure he goes on a little run and gets some form, gets the level up, and becomes a part of it,” Ferdinand explained.
For Tielemans, the timing could hardly be more important. Injuries often create unexpected opportunities for players who are struggling to secure regular playing time, and how he responds could influence his position in the team’s midfield pecking order.
United will need more than just a temporary replacement for Baleba. They will need someone capable of maintaining the team’s balance, providing control in midfield and helping the side remain competitive during a demanding period of the season.
The upcoming clash against Aston Villa could therefore be an important audition for Tielemans. A convincing performance would not only help United cope with Baleba’s absence but could also give the midfielder the confidence and momentum needed to secure a more regular role.
Ferdinand’s message is clear: with an opportunity now available, Tielemans must take responsibility and prove that he deserves to be part of United’s plans moving forward.
