I Cannot Remain in Darkness—Former Delta Governor Okowa Dumps Opposition, Backs Tinubu’s Second-Term Bid

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has publicly declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, signalling a major shift from his political position during the 2023 presidential election.

Okowa made the announcement on Saturday, November 7, while addressing supporters at an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

His endorsement is particularly noteworthy given that he contested the 2023 presidential election as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Explaining his decision to support Tinubu, the former governor said his assessment of the president’s policies and the direction of the country had changed his political perspective.

According to Okowa, although he previously belonged to the opposition, he now believes Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated a genuine commitment to Nigeria’s development.

He acknowledged that some of the president’s economic decisions have been difficult for Nigerians but argued that the policies are beginning to produce results.

Speaking at the rally, Okowa said:

“I was on another ticket in 2023, but I have now seen the light. I have seen what Tinubu is doing. I have seen where Nigeria is going. I cannot stay in darkness when there is light.”

The former governor further insisted that his decision was based on his personal assessment rather than political convenience, adding that his experience in the opposition had given him an understanding of both sides of the political divide.

“I am not here to deceive anybody. I have been in opposition before. I know what it is to be in opposition. But when you see the truth, you must follow the truth,” he stated.

Okowa’s declaration adds another prominent political figure to the list of former opposition members publicly expressing support for Tinubu’s administration ahead of the next presidential election.

His political realignment is also likely to generate conversations about shifting alliances and the changing dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

However, his endorsement comes at a time when the Tinubu administration continues to face public scrutiny over its economic reforms and their impact on the cost of living.

For Okowa, however, the president’s policies and the direction he believes the country is taking have become sufficient reasons to support another four years in office.
