Super Eagles Coach Chelle Explains Inclusion of New Players

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has defended his decision to introduce several new faces into the national team, saying the move is part of efforts to strengthen the squad and improve overall performance.

Chelle handed opportunities to a number of fresh players during the Unity Cup and ahead of the international friendly against Poland.

The Malian tactician included eight Nigeria Premier Football League players in his squad for the Unity Cup, while Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo and Rafiu Durosinmi all earned their first senior appearances during the tournament.

Defender Abdullahi Bewene, who plays for Banik Ostrava, made his Super Eagles debut against Poland, while Genk defender Christian Akpan received a late invitation for the upcoming friendly against Portugal.

Explaining his selection decisions, Chelle said the coaching crew carefully reviewed the team’s performances over the past year and identified players capable of helping the squad progress.

“We have analysed our games over the last year and brought in players we believe can help the team improve,” Chelle said.

He added that the Super Eagles must continue to raise their standards, stressing that success at the highest level often comes down to small details that separate good teams from trophy-winning sides.
