Retired Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has alleged that armed bandits operating across Nigeria may be enjoying the support of influential individuals in positions of authority.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Tsiga reflected on his time in captivity following his abduction earlier this year from his hometown in Katsina State. He also paid tribute to the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held by bandits in Katsina.
According to Tsiga, his ordeal exposed what he described as a sophisticated network that sustains bandit operations, involving informants, suppliers of logistics, and individuals allegedly connected to powerful circles.
He recounted an incident during his captivity when a phone conversation between one of the bandit leaders and an unidentified caller raised concerns about possible high-level involvement.
“One night around 2 a.m., someone called and asked the bandit leader if he was prepared to purchase 10 cartons of ammunition,” Tsiga said. “The leader responded that he would complete another matter involving an elderly man before discussing the deal.”
Tsiga said he jokingly asked to be included in the business conversation, but the bandit leader dismissed the idea.
“He told me, ‘Who are you? You are a retired general and no longer hold any office. We are dealing with people who are currently in office,'” Tsiga recalled.
The retired military officer said the comment left him deeply concerned about the possibility of collaboration between criminal groups and individuals occupying influential positions.
