The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has called an emergency meeting with native doctors, traditional priests, and priestesses as part of efforts to address growing security challenges in Edo State and other parts of Nigeria.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Friday by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Frank Irabor.
According to the statement, the meeting is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at noon at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.
The palace said the gathering was convened under the authority of Oba Ewuare II and urged all invited participants to treat the meeting with urgency.
It explained that the purpose of the meeting is to explore traditional approaches that could complement ongoing government and security agencies’ efforts to tackle insecurity.
The move comes amid increasing concerns over cases of kidnapping, cult-related violence, and other criminal activities affecting Edo State and neighbouring communities.
The Benin Traditional Council also announced a separate meeting with youth leaders, known as Okaighele, scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the palace.
The engagement is expected to focus on strengthening community involvement and encouraging grassroots participation in efforts to improve security.
The development highlights the growing role of traditional institutions in supporting security initiatives and mobilising local stakeholders in the fight against crime.
The palace stated that consultations with traditional religious practitioners and community leaders are aimed at identifying ways indigenous structures can contribute to restoring peace, safety, and stability in affected areas.
