FAAN Restores Flight Operations At Lagos Airport Terminal After Flooding

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the resumption of flight operations at the temporary international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after floodwater disrupted activities at the facility.

According to FAAN, the flooding was caused by drainage challenges linked to ongoing construction work around the airport.

The agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the situation had been brought under control and normal operations had fully resumed.

Agbebire assured passengers that the incident did not compromise safety or result in any flight cancellations.

He explained that the flooding was limited to a specific area and was traced to construction activities affecting the airport’s drainage system.

“The flooding was localised and linked to ongoing construction activities affecting drainage. The situation was promptly managed through established operational contingency measures. No flights were cancelled, and passenger safety was never compromised,” he said.

Heavy rainfall on Sunday inundated parts of Lagos, disrupting traffic and affecting the temporary international terminal at the airport.

The incident forced FAAN to temporarily suspend operations at the facility, with airlines including Air France-KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, and Fly Gabon relocated to Terminal Two after floodwater entered sections of the terminal.

Agbebire said the flooding was significant enough to interrupt airport operations, prompting the temporary relocation of affected airlines while engineers and contractors worked to resolve the drainage problem.

Following the successful intervention, he confirmed that all affected airlines have returned to the temporary international terminal.

He added that FAAN has commenced measures to improve the airport’s drainage infrastructure to minimise the risk of similar incidents during the rainy season.

“We have commenced corrective measures to strengthen drainage and prevent a recurrence. We will continue to monitor developments, and it is something we will give priority to during this rainy season,” Agbebire stated.
