Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.
Cameroon secured victory through Nyadjou, who scored in the 19th minute to put her side ahead.
Nigeria responded with sustained attacking pressure as the Super Falcons searched for an equaliser, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced an outstanding performance to preserve her team’s lead.
Bihina made eight saves during the match, frustrating Nigeria’s attempts to find the back of the net and helping Cameroon hold on until the final whistle.
The Super Falcons increased the pressure as the game progressed, creating opportunities in the attacking third, but they were unable to convert their chances.
The defeat brings Nigeria’s WAFCON 2026 campaign to an end at the quarter-final stage and means the team has missed out on one of Africa’s four automatic qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Under the qualification format, the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals earn direct qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria, having exited in the quarter-finals, will instead enter the African play-off route alongside the other three quarter-final losers.
The Super Falcons still have an opportunity to qualify for the global tournament. Success in the African play-off would take Nigeria into the inter-confederation play-offs, where another chance to secure a World Cup place will be available.
The defeat therefore does not end Nigeria’s World Cup hopes, but it leaves the Super Falcons facing a more challenging qualification pathway.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to take place in Brazil.
