Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, stated that it is only a matter of time before the country resumes a full-scale war in Gaza and moves to force out its two million Palestinian residents.
Katz made the remarks while responding to criticism from another right-wing contender ahead of the October 27 elections, noting that 70 percent of Gaza had already been emptied of its population during the offensive launched after the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.
He explained that the October 2025 ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump held supreme value for Israelis by securing the return of remaining hostages and ensuring a US commitment to disarming Hamas.
“We all understand that this is not going to happen, and the IDF is prepared, once given the directive to eliminate Hamas, to finish the job so that we can also implement the migration plan,” Katz said in a statement.
Katz noted earlier that Israel was prepared to remove Palestinians from Gaza by land and sea, but was waiting for the United States, which he claimed was discussing potential destinations for the population.
US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has denied any existence of a plan to displace people out of Gaza against their will. Katz described the migration initiative as voluntary, asserting that most Palestinians wished to leave.
Nearly the entire population of Gaza has been internally displaced, with most of the territory reduced to rubble. The October 7, 2023 attack led by Hamas killed 1,221 people according to official figures, marking the deadliest attack in Israel’s history.
Militants also abducted 251 people as hostages into Gaza. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 73,700 people, according to the territory’s health ministry.
Although the 11-month-old ceasefire reduced overall combat intensity, regular Israeli strikes have continued in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 1,375 Palestinians since the agreement came into effect. Hamas indicated in late July that it was prepared to disarm a step hailed by Trump as a major breakthrough, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the latest phase of the plan, stating there would be no Israeli withdrawal until Hamas verifiably decommissions all weapons.
