AFCON: ‘Bronze Feels Like Gold’ – Tinubu Applauds Super Eagles After Third-Place Win Over Egypt

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for winning the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), applauding the team’s resilience and fighting spirit following their semi-final disappointment.

The President’s commendation came after Nigeria’s hard-earned victory over Egypt in Saturday’s third-place playoff.

Tinubu praised the team for quickly putting behind them the pain of their semi-final loss to host nation Morocco, where they were eliminated on penalties last Wednesday. Despite that setback, the Super Eagles bounced back strongly to deliver a composed and determined performance.

Nigeria outclassed Egypt, a seven-time AFCON champion, before sealing the win in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended goalless. The Super Eagles controlled large portions of the match, displaying confidence and maturity against one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

In a statement, Tinubu said the players once again embodied the determination, perseverance, and indomitable spirit associated with Nigeria.

“Although the Eagles had an impressive run in the tournament, their semi-final defeat to Morocco on penalties dashed the hopes of many Nigerians,” the President said. “However, undeterred by the setback, the team showcased the true Nigerian spirit, and their efforts have now been rewarded.”

He added that Nigerians would take pride in the team as they receive their medals in Morocco.

“We will all celebrate them as they receive their well-deserved bronze medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco. Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you to our national team players. This bronze medal truly feels as good as gold,” Tinubu said.

Naija News reports that the Super Eagles’ podium finish further enriches Nigeria’s AFCON legacy and renews optimism for future continental success.
