The United Nations has expressed full confidence in Nigeria’s ability to contain a newly confirmed case of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus while pledging continued support to prevent further transmission.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, Secretary-General’s Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric addressed questions about the detection of the virus in Nigeria—the fifth country to report a case in the current outbreak.
Dujarric acknowledged the concern raised by the appearance of the virus in a new country but praised the Nigerian health authorities for their rapid response and thorough contact-tracing efforts. “We have full confidence in the ability and the capacity of the Nigerian Government’s health authorities to deal with this single case,” he said.
He stressed the importance of international cooperation, urging countries to adhere to International Health Regulations and work closely with the World Health Organization (WHO). “This is why the WHO was created, to help to deal with these issues, and I know they’re very much on top of it,” Dujarric added. He reaffirmed that the UN stands ready to assist the Nigerian government “in any way possible.”
The case involves a woman who recently travelled to Uganda. According to WHO, she developed symptoms on 7 October, sought medical care in Abuja on 11 October, and tested positive on 20 October. The patient is receiving treatment in isolation, and Nigerian authorities have identified 44 contacts for monitoring.
The confirmation comes amid a wider outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May and has since spread across borders. As of 19 October, WHO reported 9,637 confirmed infections and 4,646 deaths in the DRC.

Nigeria’s swift identification and isolation of this imported case, combined with active contact tracing, offers a practical demonstration of how prepared national systems can limit the risk of wider transmission. The episode underlines that cross-border vigilance and rapid information-sharing remain essential while the outbreak continues in the DRC.
