United States-based singer Rihanna has criticized voter apathy, arguing that Americans who abstained from voting contributed to President Donald Trump’s second-term victory and the economic hardship associated with his administration.
The singer made the remarks while reacting to a viral Instagram clip from a recent conversation involving journalist Charles M. Blow and former MSNBC host Joy Reid.
During the discussion, Reid suggested that Americans deserved the financial controversies surrounding Trump’s administration because of their decision to elect him for a second term.
Responding to the clip, Rihanna challenged the focus on those who voted for Trump, insisting that eligible citizens who failed to participate in the election also played a role in the outcome.
“Believe it or not, those who didn’t vote at all also did this!” she stated.
Rihanna’s comments have drawn attention to the role of voter participation in determining electoral outcomes, particularly in closely contested elections where abstention can affect the balance between competing candidates.
Trump secured a second term in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. He had previously lost his re-election bid in 2020 to Democrat Joe Biden.
Despite living in the United States, Rihanna is not an American citizen and was therefore ineligible to vote in the country’s presidential election.
Her intervention adds to the ongoing public debate over political accountability, electoral participation, and the consequences of government policies on citizens’ economic well-being.

Why Every Vote Matters
Rihanna’s remarks highlight an important democratic principle: electoral participation can influence political outcomes, and abstention may have consequences when eligible voters leave decisions to others.
However, responsibility for economic hardship cannot be attributed solely to voter behavior. Government policies, economic conditions, and institutional decisions also shape people’s financial circumstances.
While voting is an essential means of civic participation, meaningful accountability also requires informed choices, public scrutiny, and continued engagement with elected leaders. Rihanna’s comments therefore raise a broader question about whether citizens can afford to remain politically disengaged when electoral outcomes affect their daily lives.
