The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its earlier decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, restoring the competition to its traditional two-year cycle.
The decision was unanimously approved at a CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe had recently disclosed at the continent’s strategy conference in Cabo Verde that the Executive Committee would review its previous decision to extend the tournament’s cycle from two to four years.
CAF had initially proposed introducing a new Africa Nations League to replace AFCON as the continent’s biennial football competition. However, the governing body acknowledged that the proposed league would require several years to become globally competitive and financially sustainable.
The reversal means African football’s flagship national team competition will continue to provide regular opportunities for countries to compete for continental honors.
The next edition of AFCON is scheduled for 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda set to jointly host the tournament.
SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
CAF’s decision to restore AFCON to a two-year cycle is a welcome development for African football. The tournament is more than a competition; it is a major platform for showcasing African talent, promoting national pride, and generating revenue for football associations across the continent.
A four-year cycle could have reduced opportunities for players and emerging football nations while weakening the tournament’s visibility and commercial appeal.
However, CAF must address concerns surrounding fixture congestion, player welfare, and the competition’s organization. Maintaining a two-year schedule should go hand in hand with improved planning, infrastructure, and financial management.
Ultimately, the reversal represents a recognition of AFCON’s importance to African football. CAF must now ensure that the competition continues to grow in quality, relevance, and global recognition.
