Mohbad’s Family Demands Disclosure of US Laboratory for Liam’s DNA Test

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has demanded the disclosure of the United States laboratory expected to conduct a DNA test on his son, Liam.

The family has also called for the postponement of the sample collection scheduled for Saturday at Mainland General Hospital/IDH, Yaba, Lagos, pending clarification of the arrangements.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the family head, Samuel Aloba, questioned the decision to send the samples abroad, noting that a court order dated May 5, 2026, had designated the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre to conduct the exercise.

The family wants clarification on whether the Lagos facility will carry out the actual DNA examination or merely collect and forward the samples to the unnamed US laboratory.

It argued that any departure from the court-approved arrangement should first receive judicial clarification.

Among its demands are the name and address of the proposed American laboratory, evidence of its accreditation and professional competence, and detailed information about the collection, transportation, storage, and analysis of the samples.

The family also wants safeguards that would allow all parties to independently verify that the samples collected in Lagos are the same ones eventually examined abroad.

Addressing suggestions that the laboratory’s identity could remain confidential and be disclosed only to the court, the family maintained that transparency and accountability must not be compromised.

It stressed that its objections should not be interpreted as an attempt to frustrate the DNA test but rather as a demand for a credible and scientifically reliable process.

The family also recalled previous concerns surrounding the handling of samples collected during Mohbad’s post-mortem examination. It claimed that its findings suggested the laboratory reportedly assigned to receive those samples had not received any specimen bearing the singer’s name. However, it acknowledged that this remains its own account and has not been established by a court or independent investigation.

Reaffirming its support for the paternity test, the family urged that the exercise be suspended until its concerns are addressed and further court directions obtained where necessary.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death triggered widespread public concern and prompted the Lagos State Police Command to establish a special investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding his passing.

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
The Mohbad DNA controversy highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and public confidence in sensitive forensic investigations. While establishing Liam’s paternity is a legitimate matter, the process must be guided by scientific standards and strict adherence to court directives.

The family’s demand for the identity and accreditation of the proposed laboratory is reasonable, particularly given its concerns about previous sample-handling procedures. However, such concerns should be addressed through verifiable evidence rather than speculation.

Ultimately, the priority should be a credible, impartial, and legally recognized DNA examination. The interests of the child and the integrity of the judicial process must take precedence over public pressure, family disagreements, or media controversies.
