Edo Authorities Seize Expired Food and Household Products from Benin City Supermarket

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Edo State Consumer Protection Committee has confiscated a large quantity of expired and allegedly fake food and household products following a raid on a popular supermarket along Mission Road in Benin City.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, November 4, uncovered several expired products reportedly displayed on shelves for sale to unsuspecting customers.

According to the committee’s chairman, Iyamu Osaro, the seized items included groundnut oil, sachet Jik, cabin biscuits, hypo, milk, wine, soap, tomato paste, and disinfecting wipes, among other consumer goods.

Osaro explained that the discovery raised serious concerns about consumer safety and the business practices of the supermarket. He described the situation as an act of economic misconduct, alongside administrative failures that could expose customers to unnecessary health risks.

Following the discovery, the committee ordered the confiscation of the affected products and imposed a fine on the supermarket.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing need for stricter monitoring of retail outlets and stronger enforcement of consumer protection regulations.

Selling expired food and household products is not just a violation of consumer protection laws; it also puts unsuspecting shoppers at risk, particularly those who rely on product labels and supermarket standards to make purchasing decisions.

The committee’s intervention serves as a reminder to business owners that stocking and selling expired goods could attract serious consequences, while consumers are encouraged to check expiry dates before purchasing food, beverages, and household products.
