French President Emmanuel Macron has commended the Supreme Court of the United States for overturning tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, noting that the judgment underscores the significance of checks and balances in a democracy.
Speaking on Saturday at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, Macron reacted to Friday’s ruling in which the court invalidated Trump’s tariffs, declaring them unlawful.
Naija News previously reported that the Supreme Court, in a 6–3 majority decision, ruled that Trump did not have the authority to invoke emergency powers to enforce taxes on imported goods.
Macron stated that having a Supreme Court and adherence to the rule of law are vital to democratic governance. According to him, democracies function best when power is balanced by institutional counterweights.
He further revealed that France would assess the impact of Trump’s newly introduced 10 percent global tariff and respond appropriately. Macron stressed that France remains committed to exporting its products, including agricultural produce, luxury goods, fashion items, and aeronautical equipment.
Despite the court’s ruling, Trump announced fresh 10 percent tariffs on all countries just hours after the previous measures were struck down.
Macron also urged restraint in handling trade disagreements but acknowledged that nations affected by unfair tariffs would not remain silent. He emphasized that fairness in trade should be based on reciprocity rather than unilateral actions.
