NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Haze, Thunderstorms; Advises Caution for Asthma Patients

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of hazy conditions and thunderstorms across different parts of Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday, urging residents—especially those with respiratory conditions—to take necessary precautions.

In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said northern states will experience moderate dust haze on Sunday, with visibility ranging between two and five kilometres. It warned that visibility could drop to 1,000 metres or lower in parts of Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa.

The North-Central region is also expected to experience similar hazy conditions on Sunday, which will persist into Monday across both the northern and North-Central areas. By Tuesday, a lighter dust haze is anticipated in the North, while moderate haze will continue in the North-Central zone.

For southern Nigeria, NiMet predicted generally sunny conditions with patches of cloud on Sunday, alongside a slight chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rainfall in states such as Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The agency said similar weather patterns are expected on Monday and Tuesday, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain likely later in the day across parts of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Lagos.

NiMet advised residents to remain cautious due to suspended dust particles in the atmosphere, noting that individuals with asthma or other breathing-related conditions should take extra care.

Motorists were also urged to drive carefully during rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads, while airline operators were encouraged to obtain location-specific weather updates for safe planning.

The agency added that continuous monitoring of its official updates will help both residents and operators make informed decisions during the forecast period.
