Anti-South Africa Demonstrations Erupt in Ghana Over Xenophobic Attacks

Hundreds of Ghanaian youths on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Accra under the banner of the “South Africa Must Go” campaign, calling for the closure of South African-owned businesses operating in the country.

The demonstration was sparked by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have reportedly claimed lives and heightened concerns across the African continent. The incidents have also prompted several countries to begin evacuating their citizens from South Africa.

Videos circulating on social media showed protesters condemning the attacks on Ghanaians and other African nationals residing in South Africa, while demanding immediate action to address the situation.

Carrying placards bearing messages such as “Ghanaian Lives Matter,” the demonstrators marched through parts of Accra and gathered outside the premises of a South African company, chanting slogans and expressing solidarity with victims of the attacks.

The protest has intensified public debate in Ghana, with participants insisting that violence and discrimination against African migrants in South Africa must come to an end.

The development follows recent evacuation efforts by several African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, which have begun bringing their citizens home amid growing tensions.

In Nigeria, the first group of evacuees arrived on Thursday and were received by government officials, including Sola Enikanolaiye.

Protesters urged African leaders and governments to take stronger measures against xenophobia and ensure the safety of citizens living and working across the continent.

They maintained that every African life matters and called for a united response to prevent further attacks and protect migrants from violence and discrimination.
