Nigeria’s national voter register is approaching 100 million ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission recording 10,772,421 new registrants during its latest Continuous Voter Registration exercise. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos, September 7, where he also announced plans to deploy a real-time election readiness tracker to monitor preparations across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has d!ed. He died today, September 7, while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Zanzibar, the country’s vice president said. Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi said he had been suffering from a heart condition. Ndejembi added that funeral arrangements are under way in Kizimkazi, a village on the country's semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar. Ameir was an agricultural academic who largely kept a low public profile. He became Tanzania's first First Gentleman after President Samia took office in 2021. As some schools resume for a new academic session today, September 7, the Benue State government banned schools across the state from conducting compulsory extra lessons after regular school hours. The State Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, handed the directive on Monday during a press conference in Makurdi, the state capital. Adamu said any Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) seeking to organise extra lessons must obtain approval from the ministry. She stressed that such lessons based on approval must not be made compulsory for learners. At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon Air cargo plane overshot a runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, U.S. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft crashed shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Sunday after arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
