Babcock University has dismissed claims by comedian and content creator Carter Efe that he graduated from the institution with a First Class degree in Biochemistry, describing a certificate circulating in his name as fake.
The university stated that the document did not originate from the institution and does not reflect its official academic records.
The controversy began after Carter Efe, whose real name is Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, claimed during an interview that he studied at the private university and graduated with outstanding academic results. He later posted what he described as his 2023 graduation certificate on social media.
In response, Babcock University issued a statement distancing itself from the document, insisting that it was forged and contained several inconsistencies with the school’s academic standards and certification process.
According to the university, it does not issue honorary certificates to recognize undergraduate academic achievements. It also clarified that the academic classification “First Class Upper” does not exist in its grading system.
The institution explained that the correct designation is First Class Honours, which is awarded only through official degree certificates and academic transcripts issued by the Office of the Registrar.
The statement read in part:
“Babcock University unequivocally states that this document is false, unauthorized, and does not emanate from the University.
“Babcock University does not issue ‘Honorary Certificates’ in recognition of undergraduate academic performance.
“Academic excellence, including the award of First Class Honours, is formally recognized only through the University’s official degree certificate and academic transcript issued by the Office of the Registrar.
“There is no academic classification or degree known to Babcock University as ‘First Class Upper.’ The recognized classification is First Class Honours.”
The university further warned members of the public to disregard forged certificates bearing its name, including those referencing the non-existent “First Class Upper” classification, adding that legal proceedings have commenced against those responsible for the alleged forgery.
