Bauchi Govt Dismisses Driver Over Crash That Claimed Two Journalists’ Lives

The Bauchi State Government has terminated the appointment of a driver, Aminu Abdullahi, following a tragic road accident that led to the deaths of two journalists and left 11 others injured.

The incident occurred on February 6, 2026, involving a vehicle conveying 13 journalists on official assignment.

One of the victims, Kani Ben of Channels Television, later died from spinal cord injuries sustained in the crash.

The dismissal was approved by the Bauchi State Civil Service Commission during its recent sitting. The Commission stated that Abdullahi, who was employed as a clerical assistant, was found guilty of misconduct and negligence while performing driving duties.

According to the Commission, the decision was part of resolutions reached at its 13th plenary session held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. It noted that his actions violated Rules 0312 and 0327 of the Bauchi State Public Service Regulations.

Further details revealed that Abdullahi, a Grade Level 03 staff member in the State Ministry of Higher Education, had been assigned additional responsibilities, including driving a team of journalists covering activities of the North East Development Commission during a project commissioning in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

The Commission stated that reckless driving led to the crash, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries among the passengers.

It added that the decision followed recommendations from the Ministry of Higher Education and the State Executive Council.

Meanwhile, the Commission has also issued a query to the Ministry, seeking an explanation for assigning driving duties to a clerical officer.
