BREAKING : Roberto Martínez Expected To Step Down As Portugal Manager

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez is reportedly expected to step down from his position following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports, the 52-year-old has decided against extending his contract, which expires at the end of July, and is prepared to leave the national team regardless of Portugal’s performance at the tournament being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Martínez, who took charge of Portugal in January 2023, guided the team to UEFA Nations League glory in 2025 after a penalty shootout victory over Spain.

The Spaniard is expected to evaluate his next move after the World Cup, with reports suggesting a return to club football in England or another international coaching opportunity could be on the horizon.

Before joining Portugal, Martínez managed Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton FC, before spending six years in charge of the Belgium national football team.

His anticipated departure comes as Portugal prepare for what could be the final World Cup appearance of captain Cristiano Ronaldo, with the nation still chasing its first-ever World Cup title.

Meanwhile, speculation over Martínez’s successor has already begun. Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim had been linked with the role, but reports indicate he is no longer a candidate after taking charge of AC Milan.

Portugal begin their World Cup campaign against DR Congo on June 17 before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K.
