The Nigerian Senate has dismissed allegations by Senator Adams Oshiomhole that signatures were forged during the process that led to the suspension of Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking on the matter, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu described the accusation as false, maintaining that no senator’s signature was forged in connection with the proceedings that resulted in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension.
Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, had earlier alleged during an interview on AIT that the names of at least three senators were included in the committee report recommending Natasha’s suspension without their approval. He claimed some lawmakers privately informed him that they neither signed the report nor supported its recommendations.
Responding to the allegation, Adaramodu questioned the basis of the claim, insisting there was no instance of forgery.
“That’s not true. Signatures forged, over what?” he asked.
The Senate spokesman also dismissed suggestions involving Senator Ireti Kingibe, noting that she had not lodged any complaint before the Senate concerning the issue.
According to Adaramodu, senators are independent-minded individuals who would openly challenge any misconduct if it occurred.
He stressed that no senator has claimed to have been coerced or had their signature forged, adding that such an occurrence has never happened in the Senate and is unlikely to happen.
Adaramodu further revealed that the Senate would examine Oshiomhole’s remarks and determine an appropriate response.
“We will review the comments and take a position. However, no senator has reported that his or her signature was forged in relation to the Natasha matter,” he said.
He maintained that the suspension process was openly debated during plenary, witnessed by Nigerians, and conducted in accordance with established Senate rules and procedures.
Senate Committee Pledges Support for NDLEA
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the efforts of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in combating substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the country.
The assurance came during a visit by the newly appointed committee chairman, Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea, to NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Ikpea said the visit was aimed at fostering collaboration and learning more about the agency’s operations. He commended Marwa’s track record of public service, citing his achievements as former military governor of Borno State, former military administrator of Lagos State, and his leadership of the NDLEA.
In his remarks, Marwa thanked the senator for the visit and expressed the agency’s readiness to work closely with the committee in advancing the fight against drug-related crimes.
