Controversial street-pop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has apologised to organisers and fans after unexpectedly withdrawing from his celebrity boxing rematch against actor Charles Okocha following the opening round.
The much-publicised bout, organised by the Balmoral Group on Friday night, came to an abrupt end when Portable declined to continue after the first round, leaving spectators stunned and disappointed.
In a statement released on Saturday through his management, Zeh Nation/Dr Zeh, the singer expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the event organisers, officials, supporters, friends and family members.
The statement read: “We sincerely apologise to the organisers, Balmoral Group, the entire event team, our fans, friends, family, and everyone who came out to support Portable at tonight’s celebrity boxing event.”
Portable’s management acknowledged that his decision to step away from the contest had disappointed many but appealed to the public to respect his choice.
“We understand the disappointment caused by the outcome of the fight and by Portable’s decision to step away after the first round. While emotions can run high in moments like these, we respectfully ask everyone to respect his decision and perspective,” the statement added.
No official explanation was given for why the singer refused to continue the fight.
Taking responsibility for the outcome, the management apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked fans for their continued support.
“On behalf of Portable’s management, we take full responsibility for the disappointment this may have caused. We remain grateful for the unwavering love and support shown to him throughout this journey,” the statement said.
The team also praised the Balmoral Group and event officials for organising the contest.
“We appreciate Balmoral Group and everyone involved for putting together a great event, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” it added.
The management further stated that lessons had been learned from the incident and assured supporters that Portable would return stronger.
“We have taken note of the feedback, and we are committed to learning from this experience. We promise to come back stronger and do better next time,” the statement concluded.
The fight was a rematch of their first celebrity boxing clash in December 2023, which Portable won. Following that defeat, Okocha activated the rematch clause in a bid to settle the score.
Ahead of Friday’s contest, both entertainers exchanged heated words on social media, building excitement among fans eager to see the rivalry resolved in the ring.
Portable was also looking to bounce back after suffering his first celebrity boxing loss earlier this year to content creator Carter Efe. However, the highly anticipated rematch ended in disappointment when the singer walked away after the opening round.
