Edo Community Elders Invoke Traditional Sanctions Against Drug Sellers

Elders in Ogbesomwan community, located in Edo State, have taken a strong stance against the sale of dangerous substances, placing traditional curses on individuals distributing Colorado, commonly known as “Colos,” and other harmful drugs to youths.

The action followed growing concern over the damaging impact of these banned substances on young people within the community.

Gathering in large numbers, the elders appealed to their ancestors to punish anyone involved in the trade who refuses to stop. During the gathering, they performed traditional rites, including pouring libations and breaking kola nuts, as part of prayers directed against those dealing in the illicit drugs.

Their move reflects increasing alarm within the community over the spread of substance abuse and its effects on the younger generation.
