Edo police begin rescue mission for abducted GUO passengers, confirm driver’s death

The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt to rescue passengers of a GUO Transport bus who were kidnapped along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.

The attack, which occurred on April 18, 2026, involved armed men suspected to be kidnappers who ambushed the vehicle en route to South-East Nigeria.

Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the bus driver was fatally shot during the incident. She also disclosed that a female passenger who sustained gunshot injuries was rescued and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

According to the police, three other passengers were abducted and taken into a nearby forest by the attackers.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has since ordered a full-scale rescue operation, directing all divisions along the Ore–Benin corridor to intensify search efforts.

Special units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, have been deployed to support the operation, working alongside local hunters and vigilantes to track down the suspects and secure the victims’ release.

Police authorities added that the deceased driver’s body has been deposited in a mortuary, while the vehicle involved has been recovered.

The Command assured the public of its commitment to rescuing the victims and bringing those responsible to justice, urging residents to remain calm and provide useful information to aid ongoing operations.
