Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has challenged Nigeria’s revamped squad to prove themselves when they face Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.
Nigeria will head into the clash at The Valley in London with one of the least familiar Super Eagles squads seen in recent years.
Chelle has opened the door for several new players, with up to 12 footballers aiming to make their senior national team debuts during the four-nation competition.
Key stars including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi were omitted from the squad as the Malian tactician continues rebuilding the team and assessing fresh options for future tournaments.
The squad features a strong Nigeria Premier Football League presence. Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata earned his maiden call-up after recording 16 clean sheets this season, while Enugu Rangers duo Chibueze Oputa and Obinna Igboke also received invitations.
Rivers United defender Elias Ochobi and Shooting Stars players Ayobami Junior and Tijani Al-Ameen are among the home-based talents selected.
Europe-based players such as Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, Millwall winger Femi Azeez, Plymouth Argyle striker Owen Oseni, Marseille midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi and Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez were also included in the squad.
Speaking during Monday’s pre-match press conference, Eric Chelle stressed that mentality and determination would matter more than reputation.
He said the new players have an opportunity to break into the main Super Eagles squad but must demonstrate the right attitude and resilience, especially after making mistakes during games.
According to him, the key expectation is for the players to fight for every ball and maintain relentless effort throughout the match.
Nigeria will also be seeking redemption after their frustrating 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Uyo.
The Super Eagles had looked set for victory after Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 74th minute, only for Zimbabwe substitute Tawanda Chirewa to equalise deep into stoppage time.
The result dented Nigeria’s qualification hopes before the team eventually failed to secure a World Cup ticket after their playoff defeat to DR Congo.
Despite the disappointment, Chelle insisted Nigeria dominated the previous meeting and warned against underrating Zimbabwe, describing them as a strong and highly motivated side.
Nigeria enter the Unity Cup as defending champions after defeating Jamaica in last year’s final.
Historically, the Super Eagles also hold the advantage over Zimbabwe, recording four wins, four draws and one defeat in previous encounters.
