Iyabo Obasanjo Raises Concerns Over APC Consensus Process After Stepping Down

Former Ogun Central Senator and ex-governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Iyabo Obasanjo, has expressed dissatisfaction with how the party’s consensus arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections was handled.

Following the Ogun APC Caucus meeting held on April 13, 2026, where Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate, Obasanjo—who had earlier agreed to abide by the process—raised concerns about incidents that occurred during the gathering.

In a statement, she alleged that some of her supporters were prevented from entering the venue, while two others were reportedly assaulted by a party official and later required medical attention.

She said she chose not to escalate the matter in the interest of party unity but stressed that such actions do not reflect the principles of discipline, order, and mutual respect expected within the party.

Obasanjo also noted that although recognition was given to some aspirants who stepped down, particularly from a specific zone, she and others were not acknowledged despite their efforts and grassroots mobilisation, including the work of her Iyaniwura Foundation.

While congratulating the consensus candidate and formally stepping down as pledged, she reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and support for President Bola Tinubu, insisting she remains committed to the party’s success in Ogun State.

She, however, called on party leadership to ensure a more inclusive and fair process, emphasizing that genuine unity can only be achieved through recognition, respect, and collective engagement.
