The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has strongly criticised a recent meeting held by some medical practitioners in Abuja on April 22, describing it as illegal and a threat to the unity of the association.
In a statement, the Lagos chapter said the gathering was held in defiance of an earlier directive from the National Officers Committee of the NMA, arguing that it had no constitutional backing within the association’s recognised structure.
The branch warned that any resolutions or decisions reached at the meeting would not be accepted, stating that such actions could weaken the association’s constitutional order and institutional stability.
It also accused the organisers of prioritising personal interests over the welfare and professional concerns of doctors, especially at a time when discussions on better working conditions and improved remuneration are ongoing.
Signed by the Lagos State Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, the statement described the meeting as “unconstitutional, illegal, reckless, and highly unprofessional,” insisting that it lacked the endorsement of the Lagos chapter.
According to the association, the gathering is “null and void” and holds no relevance within the NMA’s structure, adding that it represents an attack on the unity and integrity of the medical body.
The Lagos NMA further expressed concern that some individuals were allegedly more focused on pursuing leadership positions within the association rather than advancing the welfare and professional growth of its members, stressing that leadership should not be driven by personal ambition.
