Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has defended the recent remarks made by Catholic bishops to President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the clerics merely spoke the truth about the state of the nation.
Kalu stated that religious leaders have a responsibility to speak honestly on issues affecting Nigerians and should not be criticised for expressing their views. According to him, the bishops’ comments reflected the concerns of many citizens and were intended to encourage improvements in governance.
The lawmaker stressed that constructive criticism is an essential part of democracy, noting that leaders should be willing to listen to sincere advice from stakeholders, including religious institutions.
He also expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to address the country’s economic and security challenges, urging Nigerians to remain patient while supporting efforts aimed at improving the nation’s fortunes.
Kalu maintained that the Catholic bishops acted in the interest of the country, adding that their observations should be viewed as a call for better governance rather than an attack on the administration.
His comments come amid widespread reactions to the bishops’ recent address, in which they raised concerns over the country’s economic hardship, insecurity, rising cost of living, and other national issues, while urging the Federal Government to intensify efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
