Leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has attributed Nigeria’s persistent electricity problems to ineffective government policies, despite the country’s vast oil and gas resources.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Spectator, Badenoch reflected on her childhood experiences in Nigeria and how they shaped her views on governance, energy policy, and economic management.

According to her, Nigeria’s inability to convert its abundant natural resources into reliable electricity demonstrates the consequences of poor policymaking.

Badenoch argued that possessing valuable resources alone is not enough if government decisions prevent citizens from benefiting from them.

She noted that growing up in an oil-producing nation that struggled with power supply influenced her belief that countries must effectively harness their resources to drive development and improve living standards.

The British politician said flawed public policies can hinder economic progress and limit the benefits that natural wealth should bring to a nation.

Her remarks come amid ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s electricity sector and the country’s continued struggle to provide stable power despite being one of Africa’s leading crude oil producers.

Badenoch also criticized economic policies that place excessive control in the hands of government, arguing that such approaches often fail to deliver the intended results.

Drawing comparisons between certain modern energy policies and the economic strategies adopted by Nigeria’s military administrations in the 1980s and 1990s, she warned that policies centered on state control and redistribution can have damaging long-term consequences if not carefully managed.

The Conservative Party leader further stated that her political philosophy has been heavily influenced by witnessing the challenges faced by developing nations.

She explained that growing up in a country with economic difficulties gave her a deeper appreciation for sound governance, strong institutions, and responsible economic management.

Badenoch cautioned that prosperous nations must avoid complacency, stressing that wealth, stability, and strong institutions should not be taken for granted.

According to her, countries must continue to protect and strengthen the systems that support economic growth and national development, warning that poor policy decisions can gradually erode hard-earned progress.
