NiMet Warns Lagos, Ogun, Rivers Residents Over Possible Flash Floods Amid Heavy Rainfall

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert, warning residents in Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and other coastal states of possible flash flooding due to expected heavy rainfall.

According to the agency’s weather outlook for Tuesday, June 30, persistent rainfall across southern Nigeria may lead to flooding, especially in coastal and low-lying communities.

NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with light rainfall over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, adding that rainfall intensity would increase later in the day.

The agency stated that moderate rainfall was expected across the southern region during the afternoon and evening, with a high possibility of flash floods in states including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

For northern Nigeria, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba, while later thunderstorms are expected in states such as Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi.

The weather agency advised residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates as rainfall intensifies.

In the North Central region, NiMet predicted cloudy weather conditions in the morning, with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Benue states.

The agency also warned that strong winds could accompany thunderstorms and urged residents to take precautions, including avoiding floodwaters, driving carefully during poor visibility, and staying away from tall trees during storms due to possible lightning strikes.

For aviation operators, NiMet advised airlines to obtain location-specific weather information from airports to ensure safe flight operations during the period.
