PDP Faction Holds Meeting With Jonathan Amid 2027 Presidential Talks

A factional national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki on Friday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan amid growing speculation over the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting comes less than 48 hours after Jonathan revealed that he was engaging in wide consultations regarding the possibility of contesting the 2027 presidency.

The former president made the disclosure on Thursday while addressing a delegation of Nigerians who visited his Abuja office to encourage him to join the race.

Responding to the appeal, Jonathan stressed that seeking the nation’s highest office was a serious undertaking that required careful consideration and extensive consultations.

“You are asking me to contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely,” he stated.

Meanwhile, a legal challenge has already emerged against any potential presidential ambition by Jonathan.

A suit currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeks to stop the former president from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The case was instituted by a lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to seek the presidency again.

On April 28, the presiding judge, Peter Lifu, directed that hearing notices be issued and served on all defendants involved in the matter.

The plaintiff is specifically seeking an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
