Rufai Oseni Alleges Plot to Weaken NDC After Peter Obi’s Defection to Party

Nigerian journalist Rufai Oseni has alleged that the legal challenge seeking to invalidate the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was deliberately initiated shortly after former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi joined the party.

Speaking during ARISE Television’s “The Morning Show” on Monday, Oseni claimed that the timing of the court action raised concerns, noting that Obi officially joined the NDC on May 3, while the lawsuit challenging the party’s registration was filed two days later, on May 5.

The broadcaster suggested that the development was part of a wider attempt to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to Oseni, the situation follows a similar pattern to previous legal battles involving opposition groups, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide the necessary access codes that would allow the NDC to upload its required documents, warning that actions perceived as restricting political participation could damage confidence in the electoral process.

Oseni questioned why opposition parties appeared to be facing repeated challenges ahead of the election, arguing that a credible democratic contest requires all political parties to be given a fair opportunity to participate.

He said that if any party believes it has enough public support to win, it should compete openly rather than rely on measures that could be interpreted as limiting opposition activities.

The journalist also warned that controversies surrounding opposition participation could affect the credibility of the 2027 election if not properly addressed.

He maintained that political parties should resolve their internal issues while institutions responsible for elections must remain neutral and ensure a level playing field for all participants.

The NDC has reportedly indicated plans to seek legal remedies over the matter, including an application for a stay of execution.
