Sam Amadi Criticizes Remi Tinubu Over Remarks on Small Businesses

Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has criticized First Lady Remi Tinubu over her comments encouraging Nigerians to embrace small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasting corn, and producing kulikuli.

In a video circulating online, the First Lady explained that the Federal Government supports small businesses by providing grants instead of loans.

She said starting ventures like akara sales, corn roasting, or kulikuli production requires little capital, adding that her office had provided grants to beneficiaries as part of efforts to empower Nigerians.

Reacting in a post on X, Amadi argued that the initiative reflects political strategy rather than effective governance.

According to him, the government focuses on rewarding party loyalists while offering minimal financial support to ordinary citizens, whom he described as “captive voters.”

He wrote: “The First Lady, like her husband, @officialABAT, is an astute politician. She knows what works best for Nigerian politics: give women party leaders brand new cars and give akara money to captive voters who will still vote based on inducement, ethnicity and religion. I applaud their dexterity.”

Amadi, however, maintained that political skill alone does not guarantee good governance.

He added that while such strategies may be effective politically, they do little to address Nigeria’s long-term economic challenges, warning that poverty could worsen if governance does not improve.
