Segun Showunmi Reacts To Emergence of Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as APC Candidate

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has strongly criticised the adoption of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.

The decision was earlier announced by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a stakeholders’ meeting, following a caucus session held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.

Reacting in a statement, Showunmi described the move as a form of “state capture,” warning that it threatens Ogun State’s long-standing tradition of independent political thinking. He argued that what is being presented as a consensus lacks credibility and instead reflects an attempt to impose control.

While acknowledging that political parties have the right to adopt internal selection processes, he maintained that any genuine consensus must be built on integrity. According to him, without that foundation, such arrangements amount to imposition rather than democratic agreement.

Showunmi further expressed concern over what he described as the absence of a proven track record among those driving the decision, insisting that Ogun people must resist any attempt to undermine democratic values.

He concluded that the situation represents a critical moment for the state, urging citizens not to accept political arrangements that could erode their independence or force them into what he termed modern-day political subjugation.
