‘We’ll Regard You As Bandits If You Refuse To Engage Criminals’ – Defence Minister Warns Troops

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has warned security personnel that any officer who fails to confront armed bandits or terrorists under the pretext of awaiting orders will be treated as an accomplice to criminal elements.

Musa issued the warning on Wednesday in Sokoto State during the commissioning of 62 operational vehicles and other security equipment valued at ₦27.127 billion, provided by the Sokoto State Government to strengthen security operations across the state.

The Defence Minister urged troops to take decisive action against terrorists and bandits whenever they encounter them, stressing that hesitation in the line of duty would not be tolerated.

He also commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his continued investment in security logistics, describing the procurement of the vehicles and equipment as a clear demonstration of responsible leadership and commitment to improving the state’s security architecture.

According to Musa, security personnel deployed for operations should act promptly against criminal elements without waiting for additional directives.

He said, “Once you are deployed, do not wait for anybody to give you an order before engaging bandits or terrorists.

“Any officer who refuses to shoot or eliminate a bandit or terrorist because they are waiting for instructions will be treated as a bandit.”

Describing the newly commissioned assets as more than just equipment, Musa said they represent a collective resolve to reinforce security in Sokoto State and across Nigeria.

He added that the armoured vehicles and tactical equipment would significantly enhance operational mobility, intelligence gathering, and force protection in the ongoing fight against banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.

The minister also cautioned security operatives to handle the newly acquired equipment responsibly, noting that the assets were procured at great cost and must be properly maintained for effective service delivery.

He further reminded officers to uphold professionalism by protecting law-abiding citizens and avoiding acts of harassment or extortion while carrying out their duties.

“You are not deployed to intimidate or exploit the people. Your responsibility is to safeguard innocent citizens and work with communities to eliminate bandits and terrorists operating within your areas,” Musa stated.
