Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has pushed back against claims of widespread hunger across Nigeria, insisting that many citizens are already benefiting from the policies and programmes introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy said ongoing government initiatives and economic reforms are beginning to yield positive results.
According to Onanuga, improvements in infrastructure and increased access to financial support have had a positive impact on the lives of many Nigerians.
He argued that the narrative of severe nationwide hunger does not align with what he personally observes in his daily interactions with people.
The presidential aide said he regularly engages with individuals around him and often asks about their living conditions, challenges, and how they are adapting to current economic realities.
Onanuga maintained that while economic difficulties exist, the level of hardship being portrayed by some critics does not reflect the experiences of all Nigerians.
He also highlighted the administration’s decision to raise the national minimum wage, noting that workers now earn significantly more than they did before the adjustment.
Referencing public discussions about hunger since the early days of the Tinubu administration, Onanuga said the government has continued to implement policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens and strengthening the economy.
He stressed that the increase in the minimum wage and other intervention measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to easing economic pressures on Nigerians.
