Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has explained the team’s squad rotation strategy as Nigeria prepares for their WAFCON quarter-final against Cameroon.
Madugu stressed the importance of managing the players carefully, noting that Nigeria could play as many as six matches during the tournament.
The coach said his technical team has been closely monitoring players who have had limited playing time, ensuring they remain prepared whenever called upon.
“It’s a long tournament,” Madugu said, adding that the demanding match schedule makes effective squad management essential to maintaining the team’s performance.
He explained that players who have not featured regularly are constantly engaged by the coaching staff to keep them physically and mentally prepared.
According to Madugu, every player must be ready to contribute at any point in the competition, both physically and psychologically.
He also praised Gift Monday’s performance against Egypt, saying her display has provided the coaching staff with another attacking option ahead of Sunday’s quarter-final.
Nigeria have several attacking players competing for places, including Asisat Oshoala, Uchenna Kanu, Joy Omewa, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Folashade Ijamilusi.
Madugu admitted that the abundance of quality players has made team selection challenging for the coaching staff.
“Having good players in the team is a good headache,” he said.
He explained that the technical team considers several factors before deciding on the players to feature, with discussions and detailed assessments forming part of the selection process.
With strong competition for places across the squad, Madugu will hope his rotation strategy helps the Super Falcons maintain their intensity as they continue their quest to retain the WAFCON title.
