The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is concerned about the possibility of losing public support ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Baba-Ahmed, a former political adviser to President Bola Tinubu, made the statement while responding to a social media user who described Nigeria’s opposition parties as largely inactive and disconnected from the political developments in the country.
The social media user had expressed concern about losing interest in Nigerian politics, arguing that recent political events had become less engaging and that opposition parties appeared to lack the strength needed to challenge the ruling party.
Responding to the comment, Baba-Ahmed rejected the description of the opposition as ineffective.
According to the PRP chairman, opposition parties are facing significant pressure from the governing party, which he described as one of the most serious challenges the opposition has encountered since the return of democracy in 1999.
Baba-Ahmed Comments on APC’s Political Strength
Baba-Ahmed acknowledged the APC’s considerable political influence, arguing that the ruling party has access to substantial financial resources and the support of a large majority of elected politicians.
However, he claimed that these advantages have not eliminated concerns within the ruling party about the possibility of voter rejection in a credible election.
“Opposition is not lacklustre. It is undergoing the most crippling assault from the governing party in the history of democracy in Nigeria,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He further alleged that the APC has significant financial and political advantages but remains concerned about the outcome of a free and credible election.
The comments come as political parties and potential candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with debates over coalition-building, opposition unity, electoral reforms and voter confidence expected to remain prominent in Nigeria’s political discourse.
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks represent his assessment of the current political landscape and should be understood in the context of his role as an opposition party leader.
