Senegalese-American singer and record producer Akon has shared his account of an incident involving Nigerian music duo P-Square and singer May D, shedding more light on some of the tensions surrounding the group’s former management.
Akon discussed the matter during an interview with Afrocani, where he reflected on his interactions with P-Square during the duo’s peak years.
According to the international music star, he became concerned about the group’s management after learning that May D was not expected to appear in the music video for a song on which his vocals were featured.
Akon said the situation raised questions about the way the project was being handled, particularly because May D’s contribution was an important part of the record.
The singer described the decision as unprofessional and said it made him uncomfortable with the proposed arrangement.
Akon Says He Felt Sorry for May D
Reflecting on the incident, Akon said he sympathised with May D, arguing that an artiste who contributes significantly to a successful song should have the opportunity to participate in its visual promotion.
He explained that he did not agree with the decision to exclude May D from the video and insisted that the singer should be involved in the production.
Akon said he subsequently pushed for May D to be brought to the United States to participate in the video shoot.
The record producer explained that his position was influenced by his belief that established artistes should use their platforms to create opportunities for emerging talents rather than limit them.
May D’s Account
Akon’s comments have also brought renewed attention to May D’s previously reported account of his relationship with P-Square and the duo’s management.
May D had earlier discussed the episode, saying Akon was unwilling to proceed with the proposed video unless he was included in the production.
According to May D, Akon also offered him additional opportunities and indicated that he would help facilitate his return to the United States.
However, May D said he later made what he considered a mistake by informing Peter and Paul Okoye about his conversations with Akon.
P-Square’s Long-Running Dispute
The latest comments have revived discussions about the history of P-Square, the music duo formed by twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye.
The brothers enjoyed major success in Nigeria and across Africa before their relationship deteriorated, eventually leading to the group’s split and their pursuit of separate musical careers.
Their disagreements, as well as issues involving their management and business relationships, have remained subjects of public discussion within the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Akon’s latest account provides another perspective on events surrounding the duo during an important period of their career, although the different accounts from the individuals involved highlight the complexity of the dispute.
