The Nigerian legal community is mourning the death of renowned legal scholar, advocate and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN.
Kasunmu died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 92.
His family announced his death in a statement, describing the late professor as a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who dedicated his life to legal practice, scholarship and public service.
The family said his death marked the end of a life distinguished by service and significant contributions to the legal profession.
Born on May 23, 1934, in Lagos to parents from Ilesa, Osun State, Kasunmu received his early education at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial School, Reagan Memorial Baptist School and Baptist Academy, all in Lagos.
He later travelled to the United Kingdom for further studies at University College London, where he earned Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees.
Kasunmu was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964 and began his academic career that same year as one of the pioneer lecturers in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ife, now known as Obafemi Awolowo University.
In 1971, he joined the University of Lagos as a senior lecturer and later became a Professor of Law. He also served as Dean of the university’s Faculty of Law between 1973 and 1975.
His contributions to legal education and scholarship earned him recognition as one of the prominent legal academics of his generation.
In 1975, Kasunmu was appointed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, a position he held for three years.
He was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on January 25, 1978, becoming one of the early members of Nigeria’s Inner Bar. He was also a Notary Public of Nigeria.
Throughout his career, Kasunmu was recognised for his work as a legal practitioner, scholar, mentor and public servant. His influence extended across several generations of Nigerian lawyers.
He also made significant contributions to legal literature, co-authoring several notable legal texts and publishing academic articles covering various areas of law.
As a practising lawyer, he handled a broad range of cases and appeared before courts at different levels, as well as arbitration panels in Nigeria and abroad.
According to his family, Kasunmu represented both Nigerian and expatriate clients during a legal career that spanned several decades.
His death marks the loss of a prominent figure whose career combined legal practice, academic scholarship and public service.
