Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of running a 20-year campaign of “lies, political manipulation and deceit” against him.
Atiku, through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, made the accusation while reacting to Obasanjo’s recent claim that he mobilised the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, to remove him from office between 1999 and 2007.
Ibe dismissed the allegation as baseless, arguing that Na’Abba, who died in 2023, could no longer respond to the claim. He also cited former lawmaker Abubakar Bwari, who reportedly gave a different account of the events.
The statement further challenged claims about Atiku’s role in Obasanjo’s 2003 re-election, citing former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu’s account that Atiku sought the support of PDP governors for Obasanjo rather than betraying him.
Ibe also revisited the controversy surrounding the Petroleum Technology Development Fund investigation, arguing that events surrounding the case showed that the allegations against Atiku were politically motivated.
The latest exchange adds to the long-running political dispute between Obasanjo and Atiku, whose relationship deteriorated during their time in office.
Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, reportedly declined to comment on Atiku’s latest allegations.
