Governor Otti Warns Against Political Victimization as Labour Party Begins Campaign in Abia

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cautioned against political victimization and discrimination against opposition parties as the Labour Party officially commenced its campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Otti gave the warning on Sunday while addressing party supporters at the Umuahia Township Stadium, where he declared that his administration would ensure equal access to public facilities for all political parties, including those in opposition.

The governor also promised that no property belonging to individuals would be demolished simply because of their political affiliations.

He stressed that anyone who fulfilled the necessary payment requirements for using government-owned facilities should not be denied access, regardless of party membership.

“I have since given an order, and I am repeating it here, that opposition parties should not be restricted from using public facilities, including this stadium,” Otti declared.

He further stated, “Never again will anybody’s fence be demolished for being in the opposition.”

The governor recalled an incident during the previous administration in which the fence of a property belonging to one of his supporters was reportedly demolished. He maintained that his government would not engage in similar acts of political retaliation against opponents or their supporters.

Expressing confidence in his administration’s performance, Otti said his achievements would earn him another term in office. He also congratulated other contestants in the 2027 governorship race, noting that democracy thrives when voters have multiple choices.

He urged Labour Party stakeholders and supporters to intensify grassroots mobilization and ensure the party’s success across their respective local government areas.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, called for a Labour Party-dominated legislature after the 2027 elections, arguing that such political control would help prevent impeachment moves against Governor Otti.

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting opposition rights is an important message ahead of the 2027 elections. Democracy cannot thrive where public facilities are monopolised by the ruling party or citizens face intimidation because of their political choices.

However, such assurances must go beyond campaign speeches. The governor’s administration must demonstrate fairness through consistent policies and equal treatment of political opponents.

Equally concerning is the suggestion that a Labour Party-dominated Assembly is necessary to prevent impeachment plots. Legislative independence remains essential in a democracy, and elected lawmakers must be free to hold the executive accountable.

Ultimately, Abia voters deserve a peaceful, competitive, and issue-based election where performance, rather than political intimidation or control of institutions, determines the outcome.
