Pastor Adeboye Denies Protesting Against Goodluck Jonathan, Says Viral Photo Was Taken in 2020

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has dismissed reports claiming that he protested against former President Goodluck Jonathan, clarifying that the widely circulated photograph showing him holding a placard was taken during a prayer walk in 2020.

Adeboye made the clarification during the church’s November 2026 Thanksgiving Service, following renewed discussions on social media about the photograph, which shows him dressed in white and green while carrying a placard.

The cleric explained that the exercise was not a political protest but a prayer walk organized in response to a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which encouraged churches to pray for the country.

According to him, the event took place in 2020, during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, rather than in 2015, when Jonathan was still in office.

“It wasn’t a protest. It was a prayer walk,” Adeboye stated, stressing that the photograph had been wrongly presented to the public.

He accused the journalist responsible for the report of misrepresenting the circumstances surrounding the photograph and failing to establish the correct facts before publication.

Recalling his academic exposure to journalism-related courses at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in the 1960s, Adeboye emphasized the importance of investigative journalism and proper fact-checking.

He urged journalists and other media practitioners to uphold professional ethics by verifying information before making it public, warning that inaccurate reports could easily mislead audiences.

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Pastor Adeboye’s clarification highlights the importance of accuracy and responsible journalism, particularly when reporting on religious leaders and politically sensitive issues.

A photograph without its original context can easily create a misleading narrative, especially when shared repeatedly on social media. However, media organizations have a responsibility to establish the date, circumstances, and background of visual materials before drawing conclusions.

While public figures should remain open to scrutiny, journalists must ensure that their reports are supported by verifiable facts. Ultimately, credibility remains the foundation of responsible journalism, and accuracy should always take precedence over sensational headlines.
