Lagos Government Debunks November 2026 School Closure Rumors

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports claiming that schools across the state would shut down in November 2026 and remain closed until March 2027, describing the information as false and misleading.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education clarified that there is no plan to alter the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school session.

In a statement released on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Basirat Lawal, urged parents, guardians, teachers, school administrators, and students to disregard the circulating reports and follow the existing academic schedule.

According to the approved calendar, schools will commence their first-term holiday on Monday, December 21, 2026, while students are expected to return for the second term on Monday, January 11, 2027.

The ministry further directed all public and private schools in Lagos State to adhere strictly to the approved calendar unless an official announcement indicates otherwise.

It also cautioned residents against spreading unverified information, warning that misleading reports could create unnecessary anxiety among parents, disrupt school preparations, and cause confusion within the education sector.

The government emphasized that any adjustments to school closing dates, resumption dates, or other academic activities would be communicated through the official channels of the Lagos State Government.

Members of the public were consequently advised to verify information from credible sources before sharing it, particularly matters concerning students and educational activities

SNOW TV EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
The Lagos State Government’s clarification is important, especially as misinformation about school schedules can create unnecessary panic and disrupt academic planning. Parents need reliable information to organize childcare, family activities, and other responsibilities, while teachers and school administrators depend on predictable academic calendars to maintain effective learning.

However, the incident also highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age, where unverified announcements can spread rapidly through social media and messaging platforms.

The government should strengthen public communication by ensuring that important educational updates are promptly published and widely circulated through official platforms. Equally, members of the public must exercise caution and verify sensational claims before sharing them.

Ultimately, the message is clear: Lagos schools are not scheduled to close in November 2026. Parents, students, and school operators should continue to follow the approved 2026/2027 academic calendar until an official change is announced.
