Davido’s personal logistics manager, Israel Afeare, popularly known as Israel DMW, has dismissed allegations linking the Afrobeats star to an alleged plot to have a social media activist VeryDarkMan was arrested over his campaign for justice following the death of singer Mohbad.
Israel maintained that Davido had no involvement in the controversy surrounding Naira Marley, VeryDarkMan, and other entertainment personalities following Mohbad’s death, insisting that members of the singer’s crew who allegedly participated in a controversial WhatsApp group did so without his knowledge or approval.
He made the clarification in a statement posted on Instagram on Thursday, amid the growing disagreement between Davido and VeryDarkMan.
“Dearest Nigerians. Oga had no hands in Naira Marley’s ordeals during his trying times in Mohbad’s case or in any plot to see VDM being arrested. Those who were in that WhatsApp group got there without his instructions or approval,” Israel wrote.
The controversy reportedly began after VeryDarkMan claimed he obtained WhatsApp conversations involving members of Davido’s circle and other entertainment figures. According to the activist, the discussions allegedly centered on efforts to get him arrested because of his persistent demands for answers surrounding Mohbad’s death.
VeryDarkMan said the discovery damaged his relationship with Davido, particularly because he had previously enjoyed a friendly relationship with the singer and some of the individuals allegedly involved. He also claimed that attempts to contact Davido for clarification were unsuccessful.
However, Israel questioned why Davido would involve himself in the activist’s disagreements with music producer Samklef and strongly denied claims that the singer attempted to acquire Mohbad’s music catalogue or sign Zinoleesky, an artiste associated with Marlian Music.
He described those claims as false.
Israel also addressed Davido’s relationship with Naira Marley following Mohbad’s death, revealing that the singer had faced pressure to unfollow the Marlian Music boss on Instagram but insisted that the police should be allowed to investigate the matter.
According to him, Davido refused to make decisions based on unverified allegations and preferred to wait for the outcome of the investigation.
He further maintained that both musicians remained on friendly terms, pointing to their previous musical collaboration.
On reports of an altercation at Naira Marley’s residence, Israel explained that the disagreement involved a former member of Davido’s 30BG crew, identified as Tolu, and one of Naira Marley’s associates. He denied claims that anyone was physically attacked or beaten.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death sparked nationwide outrage and the #JusticeForMohbad campaign, with Nigerians demanding accountability and answers about his final days.
The late singer had previously spoken about alleged intimidation and disputes involving individuals associated with Marlian Music, where he was formerly signed.
His death triggered police investigations, an autopsy, and a coroner’s inquest. In July 2025, the coroner’s court ruled out homicide and deliberate foul play, identifying a possible fatal reaction to substances administered by an unlicensed nurse as a plausible explanation. The court recommended the prosecution of the nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, over alleged unlawful medical practice and negligence.
With Israel’s latest intervention, the disagreement between Davido and VeryDarkMan has taken another turn, although the claims surrounding the alleged WhatsApp discussions remain a matter of dispute among the parties involved.
