Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved the disbursement of ₦300 million to support Imo indigenes studying at the Nigerian Law School and those recently evacuated from South Africa.
Under the intervention package, 250 Imo residents who returned from South Africa will receive ₦1 million each to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. In addition, 100 Imo students enrolled at the Nigerian Law School will benefit from a ₦500,000 grant each to help offset the increasing cost of living and educational expenses.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Owerri by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba.
According to Emelumba, the governor approved the financial assistance after reviewing the challenges currently facing both groups of beneficiaries.
He explained that the law students had appealed to the governor for support due to rising living expenses and financial pressures affecting their studies. Responding to the request, Uzodimma approved the intervention as part of efforts to ease their burden.
The commissioner noted that the governor viewed the request as both urgent and necessary, considering the importance of supporting young Imo indigenes pursuing professional education.
Regarding the South Africa returnees, Emelumba said the governor approved the assistance out of concern for citizens who had endured difficult experiences abroad and were forced to return home.
He stated that the ₦1 million allocated to each of the 250 returnees is intended to serve as a reintegration fund, enabling them to rebuild their lives and adjust to their new circumstances with minimal hardship.
According to the commissioner, the initiative aligns with the administration’s Shared Prosperity Agenda and reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of Imo citizens, regardless of where they reside.
Emelumba emphasized that the Uzodimma administration remains focused not only on infrastructure development but also on providing social support for residents facing economic and personal challenges.
He further noted that the governor has consistently demonstrated his dedication to education and youth empowerment, pointing out that many of the law students benefiting from the latest intervention are already recipients of the state government’s scholarship programme.
“Many of them are already on the state’s scholarship list, and from time to time, the governor extends additional support to assist them,” Emelumba stated.
He added that the latest approval underscores Uzodimma’s continued commitment to education, youth development, and the welfare of Imo indigenes, particularly those facing difficult circumstances.
